Menstruation is a very less talked about subject due to it being termed as a taboo. But times have changed, now women openly talk about menstruation and their menstrual health, and even healthcare facilities have started prioritizing period positivity. You don’t need to shy away from discussing it with your doctor, learn to embrace your body the way it is, and it will help you understand your body more deeply. The truth is period is a very healthy part of being a woman, embracing period positivity in your life can encourage other women to embrace it as well, and they can full-heartedly celebrate their periods. Understanding and cherishing your menstrual cycle can help you make informed decisions regarding your health and well-being. Let's see what you can do to spread period positivity. • Accept Your Cycle Accepting that menstruation is part of your body and life can be a good start. A typical menstrual cycle is between 21-35 days and it can be divided into four phases and each phase depends on levels of estrogen and progesterone. These four phases are: - Menstruation: The shedding phase. During this time your body bleeds for 5 or 7 days. This happens because every month your body prepares for the pregnancy, and when no pregnancy occurs, the uterus sheds its lining and causes bleeding. - Follicular Phase: This is the longest phase in your menstrual cycle, it starts from the first day of your period and lasts up to 13 to 14 days ending in ovulation. Many eggs mature in the ovaries, with an increase in estrogen. - Ovulation: On day 14, it’s your time for ovulation, during this time a mature egg is released from the ovary. During this time if the sperm reaches the egg, there are high chances of getting pregnant, especially in the three days leading up to and including ovulation. - The Luteal Phase: During this time the level of progesterone is very high, plus there’s also the presence of estrogen in small amounts. Your body prepares for the potential pregnancy, and you start experiencing PMS (premenstrual syndrome) like tender breasts, mood swings, and bloating. • Embrace Your Cycle Gain knowledge about the menstrual cycle and optimize your health. Get to know your energy levels and any physical changes your body goes through during your menstrual cycle so that you can effectively plan your activities and manage your symptoms to maintain proper menstrual health. Remove the stigma surrounding menstruation and foster a sense of control. • Empower Yourself Menstrual is very much needed, not only for women but every individual. It's important to understand the concept of menstruation to even think of period positivity. To empower yourself you can start by educating yourself, tracking your cycle, talking openly about menstruation, and spreading menstrual cycle awareness. Practice self-care, give your body rest during menstruation, and seek support if you need it, do not hesitate.
